Woodsy Coffee-Infused Jerky

Trailside Trek Treat

Woodsy Coffee-Infused Jerky

Maine, a state famed for its resplendent landscapes, brims with a sense of adventure. From its craggy coastlines to its dense forests, there’s a trail for every wanderer. And every seasoned trekker knows that along these trails, sustenance becomes more than just nourishment; it becomes an experience in itself. Here, we explore the significance of a uniquely Maine-inspired delicacy – the Woodsy Coffee-Infused Jerky.

The mention of jerky immediately conjures up visions of hikers reaching into their backpacks, of campfires under starlit skies, and of sustenance that fuels long journeys. Jerky, with its rich history as a preserved meat, is the ideal companion for trekkers winding their way through the Appalachian Trail or exploring the hidden recesses of the Acadia National Park. But the addition of coffee to this age-old favorite weaves a story that’s deeply intertwined with Maine’s culture and landscape.

In the quaint coastal towns and the tranquil villages dotting Maine’s expanse, coffee shops stand as welcoming beacons, inviting locals and tourists alike. These aren’t just places to grab a cup of joe; they are havens of conversation, of shared tales, and of the omnipresent aroma of freshly brewed coffee. By infusing jerky with coffee, this recipe captures the spirit of these Maine coffee houses, translating their warmth and camaraderie into a bite-sized snack.

But the journey doesn’t end there. The inclusion of cola, dark brown sugar, and molasses gives this jerky a character reminiscent of Maine’s historic sweet shops, where traditional sodas and confections reign supreme. These flavors evoke memories of childhood trips to the local store, of the sweet tang of molasses cookies, and of sarsaparilla sodas sipped on warm afternoons.

The combination of the robustness of the coffee, the sweetness of the cola and molasses, and the kick from the cayenne pepper captures the essence of Maine – a place of contrasts. It’s a dance between the ruggedness of its cliffs and the serenity of its meadows, between the fierceness of its winters and the gentle embrace of its springs.

Yet, beyond its flavors, this jerky tells a story of Maine’s resilient spirit. It’s a nod to the pioneers who roamed these lands, to the fishermen who braved its seas, and to the foresters who treaded its woods. These were people who understood the value of preserved foods, of meals that could withstand the tests of time and terrain.

To craft this jerky is to partake in a tradition. It’s to understand the value of patience, as the meat soaks in its marinade, drawing in flavors, preparing itself for its transformation. And as it dries, it encapsulates the stories, the traditions, and the flavors of Maine, ready to be savored with every bite.

Print Recipe

  • 2 pounds London Broil beef roast thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1 cup brewed coffee
  • 1 cup cola
  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • ¼ cup dark brown sugar
  • ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons Morton TenderQuick
  • 2 Tablespoons molasses
  • 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper

  • Start by mixing together a marinade that will imbue the beef with deep, flavorful notes. In a non-reactive bowl, combine all the ingredients, whisking thoroughly until well-blended.
  • Place the beef slices in the marinade, ensuring each piece is fully covered. Seal the bowl and let it marinate overnight or up to 24 hours, allowing the flavors to meld and penetrate the meat.
  • Set your smoker or oven to 170°F. Remove the beef from the marinade, pat dry, and sprinkle with black pepper. Position each slice on a grill grate or jerky rack, ready for their transformation.
  • Monitor the jerky for 2-3 hours, occasionally checking to make sure it’s drying uniformly. Aim for a texture that’s firm to the touch but retains some pliability.
  • Once done, transfer the warm jerky into a gallon zip top bag, allowing the residual heat to create a slight steam, further enhancing its tenderness.
  • Store and savor: Enjoy immediately, keep on the counter for 3-4 days, or refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.

As the trails of Maine beckon and adventure awaits, let us remember that in every journey, it’s the memories we make, the stories we share, and the flavors we savor that truly matter. This jerky, with its layers of taste and history, serves as a reminder of Maine’s timeless beauty, of its tales waiting to be told, and of the simple joys that life offers. In the heart of every wanderer lies a passion for exploration, and with the Woodsy Coffee-Infused Jerky by their side, they are ever ready to write their next chapter.
