A Cozy Retreat in Caratunk, Maine

  • Location: Nestled in the heart of Caratunk, Maine, our quaint and nicely wooded eight-site campground offers a serene and intimate camping experience.
  • Sites and Pricing: Each site is available at $30.00 per night, plus $2.70 for Maine lodging tax. Ideal for a family unit or a group of four. For groups with more than four adults, there’s an additional charge of $9.00 per person (tax included).
  • Accommodation: Most sites accommodate one tent, with select sites suitable for a mid-sized RV or pop-up camper.

  • Sanitary Facilities: The campground is equipped with two composting pit privies, each featuring separate men’s and women’s rooms. For added convenience, flush toilets and showers are available in the lower level of our campground office.
  • Water Access: Two centrally located water spigots provide fresh drinking water within the campground.
  • Campsite Features: Each campsite is well-appointed with a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings and meals outdoors.
  • Group Area: For larger gatherings, there’s a small group area with a fire ring and benches, ideal for socializing and enjoying the Maine wilderness.

General Information

  • Flexible Scheduling: Multiple guided trips are often scheduled for the same date to provide more options. Once a 50% deposit is made for a specific trip, that date is “locked in” for that trip, and others scheduled for the same date will be removed.
  • Pricing: Prices for guided trips are based on a minimum of 4 people per trip.

Your Guide: Steve Toothaker

  • Expertise: As a Registered Master Maine Guide, Steve Toothaker is the heart and soul of Bullfrog Adventures. Born and bred in Maine with a family history stretching back ten generations, Steve embodies a deep connection to the state’s natural beauty.
  • Background: Steve’s passion for the outdoors was ignited in his youth, learning hunting, fishing, and trapping in Newburgh alongside his father and grandfather.
  • Scouting Influence: His commitment to nature was further shaped by his Boy Scout experiences and later as a Scoutmaster.
  • Whitewater Tubing Innovator: Now in his early sixties, Steve is not only an experienced guide but also a pioneer in whitewater tubing, contributing to the sport’s development.
  • Personal Pursuits: Steve relishes exploring new terrains, often canoeing, hiking, and camping with his wife. He’s also an enthusiastic participant in Maine’s downriver canoe racing circuit with his son, Ben.

  • Tammy: Steve’s wife, Tammy, is the organizational force behind Bullfrog Adventures, managing bookings, social media, shuttle services, and the campground. A lover of serene paddling experiences, Tammy has joined Steve on numerous canoe trips across Maine.
  • Off-Season Role: During quieter months, Tammy focuses on her career as a teacher and reading specialist.
  • Family Tradition: Steve and Tammy’s children, Ben and Sarah, although pursuing their own paths, occasionally join the family for adventures, illustrating the enduring bond of the outdoors in their lives.

Our Facilities

  • Summer Office: From the warmer months of summer, operations shift to Caratunk, where our office is nestled on 39 acres along the scenic US Route 201.
  • Campground: A quaint eight-site campground is located on the hillside behind the office, complete with picnic tables, fire rings, central water faucets, and privy-style restrooms. Showers and flush toilets are also accessible near the office.
  • Rates: Camping sites are available at $30 per night, plus a $2.70 Maine lodging tax.
  • DIY Ethos: Since 2002, Steve and Tammy have personally designed and constructed the office building and campground, continuously improving the facilities every year.
